how can I get my cat in a cat show?
I have a beautiful male American Shorthair named Barley and he has all of the qualifications of an American Shorthair, and I think he would do great in a cat show. First of all is it okay if he is nuetered? And are American Shorties allowed to have a nose with 2 colors? His is brown and pink. So how can I enter him? Do I have to pay? I live in the Virginia/NC area. One in DC would be great, too. Do I win anything if he does good? What contest are there besides a classic show? Like agility. you should color cat and than you can get your cat to the cat show.
by the way you should color your cat as the cat show color i mean do you know which color used to the poster of that show if you know so plz color your own nice cat as that color then go to the cat show , have a nice show for you and for you nice cat.

http://www.cfa.org is the official website of the Cat Fancier’s Association. Those are the one’s that usually sponsor cat shows. I’m sure there may be other shows with different sponsors, but the two shows I’ve been to were sponsored by CFA.
According to this website: http://animals.howstuffworks.com/pets/ca t-show2.htm it says that altered cats (cats that are spayed or neutered) are allowed to be entered in shows.
As far as if they are allowed to have a nose with 2 colors, if you to this link: http://www.cfainc.org/breeds/standards/a merican-sh.pdf it will tell you the "ideal" standard for American Shorthairs. From what I can understand of it, it sounds like a single color is the ideal, meaning that he would probably place higher in the shows with a single color, but nose color may not be a big influence in the overall rating.
This link: http://www.cfa.org/exhibitors/new-exhibi tors.html#showrules will give you a better idea of questions that are commonly asked of people new to showing, including how to enter Barley in a cat show. I am not sure about payment, since I’ve never had one of my cats entered in a cat show. I do have a purebred American Curl that I adopted at a cat show from an actual breeder who does regular showing, so if you would like, I can contact her and find out more information for you if you have questions the CFA website doesn’t answer satisfactorily (if that’s a word lol).
I’m not sure the location of the cat shows coming up. I live in Southern California and I know there weren’t any local enough for me to visit for awhile (and I’ll drive pretty far to see them). Again, the CFA website should tell you the upcoming sponsored shows. You might also type in "2010 cat shows in [your area]" for other non-CFA sponsored shows.
Cats can’t be shown before they are 4 months old. From 4 months to 8 months, they will compete in the Kitten Class, which is for altered or unaltered kittens. In this class, kittens will compete with other kittens of the same breed, gender, and color for first, second, and third place ribbons. Each color group and breed is judged and both the first and second place kittens are awarded first or second place in either Best of Color or Best of Breed. When all kittens have been judged, they are called back for the Top 10 Kitten Final. In an Allbreed ring, all kittens are judged, whereas in a specialty ring only longhair and shorthair kittens compete.
Cats of adult age (8 months or older) are placed in either Championship Class or Premiership Class, which each have different types of awards. Barley would most likely compete in the Premiership Class since he’s neutered. Below are the links to information about both classes and how they are judged and moved up in ratings:

If you would like to show a non purebred cat, you can enter them in the CFA Household Pet Class. The only rules are that they can not be declawed and if they are over 8 months old, they have to be spayed or neutered. Since they are not judged on breed ideals, they are judged based on uniques, appearance, unusual markings, and type of disposition. Each cat that shows good health and vitality are awarded Merit ribbons, and at the end of the judging, the best household pets are in the finals.

Your cat isn’t an American Shorthair - he’s a DOMESTIC shorthair - a cat of no particular breed.
Yes - he can compete in the Household Pet class and he has to be neutered to compete in that class so that’s good that he already is. He’d compete as a Shorthaired Household Pet and his color/pattern is called Red Mackerel Tabby and White.
Yes - you have to pay to enter shows. It costs about $80 for a two day show.
You win rosettes (ribbons) if he makes it into the final rings. If he ends up in the top 20 in your Region or top 25 Internationally at the end of the season you get additional awards - plaques, trophies, etc.
Some shows do have agility but not very many.

edit: Sapphire - perhaps you should have looked at the picture before giving info about showing pedigreed cats because this cat isn’t one. CFA is also a lousy registry to show with as a Household Pet as they don’t award titles or Regional, International standings.

He’s a darn cute domestic short hair. American short hair is a breed, the domestic is the cat that Nature created. Since he’s not pedigree, he can be shown as a house hold pet. The best shows for HHP’s are TICA ones, as they have a better point accumulation towards regional champions than CFA does. Not sure about ACFA. HHP’s must be altered, so you’re already there. That is the main requirement. Show entry fees vary by show. And yes, some shows now have cat agility contests, which are great fun for the spectators and the cats as well.
